East and Central Europe:

An airshow near Austerlitz 02/09/2006

CIAF 2006  was held on September 2nd and 3rd 2006 on Brno airport in Moravia, in the Czech Republik. This air event is organised every year by the the CIAF agency. As nearly always the display line was the most exotic participation anywhere in Europe during the season. Brno airport is also home of Moravan light airplanes. The splendid austro-hungarian stylished Brno city is the second largest in the country, and Austerlitz battleground is only a few kilometers away from the airfield !

Among many participants this year the public was granted with were a four-ship civilian Soko Galeb display team from Aeroclub Beograd ( Serbia and Montenegro), a MiG-29 UB from the Magyar Air Force, a MiG-29 Fulcrum A from the Slovak Air Force, and the first USAF F-16 West Coast Viper Team display ever in the Czech Republik. Frecce Tricolori flew with the Alenia C-27 J. Team 60 was sent by the Swedish government who was eager to thank the Czech people for having chosen to equip their Caslav fighter Wing with Jas-39 Gripen jetfighter airplanes. The Czech Air Force Gripen did the best Jas-39 solo display ever seen anywhere, as testified by the astonished eyes wide raised by the swedish air force Team 60 guys who were present onsite. A two-ship L-159 display was part of the fest as the solo Aero display aircraft, and most local military and police helicopters also were on display. Unfortunately Strizhi MiG-29 team from the Russian Air Force cancelled its promised return, after its success at Brno during CIAF 2005.

Czech people are friendly enthusiasts, and organisers do a fine job without taking themselves seriously. We were glad to meet an ex-air force MiG-29 pilot we had met in England in 1991 and who is now the aircrew coordinator.

As a matter of facts we will report every year on this airshow on Sky-Lens'Aviation'. And we also hope the Russian Air Force will come back to this NATO display. So remain broadcasted to this magazine.

Sky-Lens 'Aviation' will elect the 'best display item' in every reported airshow. So we start with CIAF 2006 : best display was the Slovak Air Force Mil Mi-24 Hind helicopter launching flares, and we also point out that the same country did what we think was the second best display in the show with their solo Fulcrum. Many congratulations to the Slovak Air Force.

It remains to be seen if CIAF 2007 will definitely take place at Brno airport. Local airport authorities have required the show to move to another airfield, on expanding passenger traffic grounds. On arrival from Praha to Brno area in a CSA airline ATR-42, on Friday September 1st, we had to overfly the rehearsing Frecce Tricolori Team and we guarantee that passengers did not complain about the 20 minutes additional delay we had to face so as to land after the italians. They were rather impressed to attend an air demo from above. So who does complains about these airshows ? We guess airtliner crews and airport people who make their money with aviation don't complain at what provide good public relations for their living... Am I right ?
